Candle making recipes are more than just formulas. It is not a requirement to follow a rigid and scientific formula because there should still be the element of fun. Candle making is not accomplished based solely from formulas; instead, it is more of an enjoyable thing that made the process successfully completed.

There are wide varieties of candle making recipes; yet, the success of candle making rely more on the accuracy of experimentation.

Such parts of candle making are part of candle making recipes. Through adding the color and fragrance a recipe is already formed.

To add too much dye and oil will aid to keeping a candle from burning well. Furthermore, too much fragrance will also have a stronger smell as well. In order to produce strongly scented candles you need to place at least one ounce of liquid fragrance oil to one pound of candle wax.

If you make your own candles, you do not have to deal with strong scents; which are so popular in various candles stores. You can use your own measurements in order to produce a personalized candle.

Another important matter is the Dye. To dye candles correctly, melt one pound of wax as what was regularly done to candles. Upon the melting of the wax and after the color has been well-mixed, pour the wax into the ice cube tray through filling 11 holes.

When these wax cubes have cooled and each one has the perfect amount of coloring to dye one pound of wax, it is already ensuring that a roster of candles separately poured are going to have the same color and completely takes the guesswork out of dyeing your candles.

Stearic acid and vybar are the two basic additives; which beginning candle makers are likely to run. Stearic acid is utilized in almost all candles to harden the wax and make the candles durable. What is great here is, you cannot use too much. Normally, there are only one or two tablespoons per pound of wax.

Vybar, on the other hand, is a hardener that is usually cheaper than stearic powder; but the disadvantage of this is, it is more difficult to find unless you have a local candle making shop. In addition, vybar products also aid in making your candle a lot more opaque. It is advisable to allot one teaspoon per pound.

Parol oil is another wonderful additive. It is used to provide the surface of your candle a mottled appearance which looks like snowflakes or starbursts. To achieve this, add one half to one ounce per pound of wax; this can absolutely turn your candles look cool.

Here are more tips for your candle making recipes:

Above all these numerous ingredients with their formulas and everything that was done at home; it is most important to not be afraid to experiment. You are not doing it just to find out the result but to discover beyond what the eyes can see. It may bring you unique results, which will not be achieved without the courage and perseverance to do so.

You must be prepared for whatever outcomes that might arise; especially if you are just starting out. This is definitely not the end of your quest to make your first candle. What is more important is, you follow all the instructions and include all the above-mentioned candle making recipes. If you have done this, you are definitely on the right track.

Candle making techniques are varied from simple to complex multi-stage procedures. Basically, candle making is mixing waxes and other ingredients at right proportion then melting it in a water bath heater; and finally, pouring it into molds.

Before starting candle making techniques, it must be remembered that the ingredients are largely inflammable materials; thus, extreme care must be practiced. And also, the melting must have good air flow or ventilation because there are lots of fumes and obnoxious odor produced.

The first step is to learn about the characteristics of your ingredients especially the waxes. Waxes have their specialties that must be utilized to the maximum; paraffin wax for its low cost, beeswax for its smooth texture and other waxes for their special uses.

Candle making techniques involve familiarity with the different types of moulds. Moulds greatly affect the costing and quality of the finished product. Some moulds are expensive but efficient. Some are cheap but can be used only once, some are complicated but produced exquisite designs.

Examples of cheap moulds are recycled containers of soft drinks and beers, cartons, margarines, yogurt, corrugated cartons and others. Examples of expensive moulds are made of glass, hard rubber, plastics and others.

Candle making techniques are also influenced by the different recipes of candle making. The procedure of forming wax mixture is somewhat simple, but the recipes are somewhat complicated because of the numerous waxes, scents and others.

To get the best possible recipe for candle making, one needs experimentation if he wants to venture into this business. This includes blending different combination of essential oils to produce the right scent based on your taste.

Other special ingredients that influence candle making techniques are:

Stearic acid – this gives hardness to the finished candle. Vybar is another hardener that is cheaper than stearic acid, but harder to find.

Parol oil – gives the finished product a mottled surface appearance which will make the candle unique and somewhat attractive.

Here are several candle making techniques to produce attractive finished products:

1.To make multi-color pillar candle, you have to melt wax mixtures separately with different colors. Press them together in one candle before they harden. Or you can devise a special mold for this purpose.

2.Make floating candles using wax crystals. This does need heating; thus, it can be a project for children. Candle making techniques need to be supervised by adults if done by children.

3.Hand dipped procedure is one of the oldest and traditional candle making technique. This does not need the use of moulds. A taut wick is dipped into melted wax mixture several times until the layers of wax reach desired diameter. This can be done by dipping several candles simultaneously into melted wax bath.

4.Hand rolled candle is done by rolling wax sheets into candles. Different colored sheets give the candle uniqueness. This candle making technique does not need heating, thus can be done by children as a hobby; but again this must be under supervision of an adult.

5.Sand candle is another candle making technique that does not need heating. This is just the act of planting a wick into a powdered wax mixture in a suitable container. Another similar to this is making a gel-type candle. Again here, the wick is just inserted into a container of a gel wax.

Other candle making techniques make food-like candles for different kinds of occasions.

Candle making has become a popular hobby; and much more, it has become a profitable enterprise. The uniqueness and beauty of your candles largely depend on the type and kind of candle making mould you will use.

The following are the most commonly used candle making moulds.

Metal mould – this is a cylinder candle making mould with a hole at base for the wick to pass through. The bottom cover is secured by a screw or a tight fitting bottom cover from the outside. Both ends of the wick are tied to rods at the bottom and upper covers. The tied wick must be taut. The candle is finished off by a knife to shave off excess wax and wick string.

Two piece plastic moulds – this candle making mould is used for novelty-shaped candles with irregular shapes. Excess wax at the seam of the mold has to be hand cut with a wax knife. High concentration of dye pigments and essential oils must be avoided in this type of mould because it might distort the plastic mold.

Soft Rubber mould – used to mold figurines, fruits and other irregularly shaped candles. This candle making mould is easier to use than two-piece plastic mould. But sometimes the cooling wax mixture, as it hardens, distorts the shape of the mould. This is the disadvantage of this mould compared to two-piece plastic mould.

Hard rubber candle making mould – easier to use than other types of moulds but more expensive and can be easily destroyed. The resulting product is of good quality.

Glass, Acrylic and Plexiglas candle making moulds – are either transparent or translucent that wax mixture can be viewed inside them. They are easy to use and produce quality candles. These are used for making candles with pressed flowers or herbs.

Used wax coated juice cans – punch a hole at the bottom for wick to pass through. When the wax mixture hardened into candle form, tear away the tin sheet from the finished candle. This mould is ideal for multi-wick candle.

Used Milk Carton – used for grouping large square candles with heights from 2 to 150 cm. You can just tear away the carton when the wax mixture hardens. Multi-wick complex candles can be made using this candle making mould. You can make Patina-coated candle out of this mould.

Canning and baby food jars moulds – must be pre-warmed to reduce chances of forming bubbles inside the glass jar. This warming also makes the paraffin wax stick to the wall of the jar. Stick one end of the wick at the bottom of the jar with wick tab. You can finish the candle in the jar with ribbons or other decorative spices and flowers.

Paper cup – ideal for mixture of paraffin wax and beeswax. When the wax mixture hardens, just tear away the paper cup.

Used foil – lined boxes, like yoghurt carton, plastic margarine container, chocolate carton boxes and others, can make unique and complicated form candles. They can be multi-wick if you desire.

Terra cotta small pots of varied designs, shapes and sizes – can mold nice unique candles. Paintings or decorative stickers can add beauty to these potted candles.

Small galvanized bucket – perfect for decorative candle. It could be hanged in appropriate locations.
Rustic looking candles can be made out of corrugated cardboard. This cardboard can be shaped into unique forms. The candle comes out of the mould with characteristics of corrugated surface. Just tear away the board after the wax mixture has hardened.

If you are looking for a fun and fulfilling hobby, then you must try aromatherapy candle making. You will definitely enjoy this if you are fond of creating beautiful and, at the same time, functional personalized candles.

The term aromatherapy pertains to a science that involves using natural essential oils to promote an improved state of well being. Even in a thousand years back, people have been interested in aromatherapy because this practice has brought a very beneficial sense of well being through its therapeutic elements.
Aromatherapy is proven and tested to treat insomnia, heighten energy levels, and reduce the pain of migraines.

Thus, the popularity of aromatherapy candle making came because of the feasible thought of combining various beneficial aspects of well being and aesthetics.

In order to get started in aromatherapy candle making, every candle maker needs the following materials:
Scale

Measuring utensils
Thermometer
Double boiler
Candle making molds
Aprons, goggles, pot holders, and other safety equipment

Aromatherapy candle making is a unique process. The fragrance used in this method is a lot different from the fragrance used in other candle making methods.

Most candle makers prefer to use pure aromatherapy products which are made with pure essential oils; these came from natural plant extracts. Commercial fragrances, on the other hand, are composed of synthetic chemicals.

This separates aromatherapy candle making from the rest. It provides a special therapeutic benefit to people.

It is very vital to use high-quality fragrance to produce best results. Making use of low- quality materials will just result into a product with a weak scent that has limited aromatherapy benefit.

Unlike other types of candle making, aromatherapy candle making does not use paraffin wax; instead, it uses soy wax for their candles. This particular wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil that has a low melting point and disperses fragrance better. It is so, because most candle makers deemed soy wax as the easier element to work with compared to paraffin wax.

Another type of wax, which can be used to make aromatherapy candles, is the beeswax; but then again, this wax is very expensive.

Aromatherapy candle making is a lot easier if you will just strictly follow certain instructions.

1.You must have a clear purpose before beginning with this method. Whether you want to make a candle to relax and relieve you from stress, this is good enough to be your motivation. It is important to be able to direct your goal and make it easier choose the most suitable essential oil.

2.Bear in mind that essential oils posses a very strong fragrance. You can continue by adding the oil to your wax.

3.It is best to consult a book or a website with regard the most suitable aromatherapy blends if you are just new to making candles.

4.Upon gaining enough experience in aromatherapy candle making, you already have the option to make your own formulas.

5.Maintain records of your work so you can have duplicates of these results for future reference.

As a conclusion, it is advisable to pick a color for your candle that goes well with the chosen fragrance. A concrete example is an aromatherapy candle which uses lavender and is most often purple. The same goes with a candle, which is composed of ginger, lemongrass, grapefruit, and other sorts of scents; in this case, yellow or orange is a more logical choice. Having said all these things, you should try for yourself aromatherapy candle making to gain its useful benefits.

Soap and candle making can be done at home using ordinary kitchen utensils and appliances.

Soap making is the more complicated process in soap and candle making combination. Soap has been used for centuries to clean dirt. This is done by engulfing the dirt by its bubbles. Then, this bubble-dirt combination is washed away by water. Soap is water-soluble; thus, it will dissolve in water. This is the reason why it is ideal for washing things and the human skin.

Soaps are in solid, liquid and jelly forms. Solid form is used for bath soap, clothes cleaning soap and industrial cleaning soap. Liquid soap is usually used for hands washing, clothes washing and dishes washing. The jelly soap is used for hand washing and clothes washing.

Saponification process is the main reaction that is involved in soap making. It is the esterification of vegetable oils when mixed with a base compound; like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The resulting product is a jelly-like substance that hardens when it cools.

To complete saponification, the mixture of vegetable oil and the basic substance must be stirred continuously under controlled temperature. Proportion of the mixture of vegetable oil and the base substance must be precise in terms of concentration and volume. Too much vegetable oil in the mixture will result in a product that is too oily and with fewer bubbles. Too much sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide will produce a very harsh soap due to excess reactive base substance.

After complete saponification of the mixture, the jelly-like product is poured into molds to be cooled. Then, the hardened product is chopped into convenient sizes and pressed into shape.

There are two main types of soaps: the soft soap, which is basically a product of the reaction of potassium hydroxide, and the vegetable oil. This is usually used as bath soap because it is very gentle to the skin and hands. Hand soaps, beauty soaps, whitening soaps and medical surgical soaps are basically made of this soap.

Below are still some of the facts on soap and candle making.

Another kind of soap is the hard soap. This is the product of the reaction of sodium hydroxide and vegetable oil. This is used for cleaning of clothes and others. This cannot be used as bath soap because it is harsh to the skin.

Fillers are inert substances that give hardness to the finshed product. This also makes the soap product opaque instead of the jelly-like, translucent product.

Scent is a blend of essential oils; like lavender, jasmines, lemon, citronella, and other. This is added at the end of the safonification process because these oils evaporate during high temperature.

Oil soluble dyes are used to color the soap. This is added and mixed with other ingredients at the beginning of the saponification process. This is thoroughly mixed with the soap batch.

Some soaps claim that they have some special abilities to give the human skin better appearance. These are done by adding some special ingredients to the soap while in the saponification process.

The other process of soap and candle making is candle making.

In this, unlike soap making where there is chemical reaction called saponification, the process involved is just mixing and melting of ingredients. Then the melted ingredient is poured into suitable molds. The finished soap product is packed in attractive wax papers or plastic packaging.

Soap and candle making can be a hobby or it can be a profitable venture also.

A beginner’s candle making experience is definitely a memorable one. Most people absolutely love candles. These can be of various uses like decorations and displays at home.

Beginner’s candle making can be made with available kitchen utensils and equipments at home.

You can start with the most common waxes as ingredients; paraffin wax and beeswax. Paraffin is cheap while beeswax is a little bit expensive but gives the candle a smooth texture.

The dyes, which are to be used, can be food coloring solution; these are available in the kitchen most often. This is mixed thoroughly with the wax mix. Mixing the dye coloring is done at the beginning of the melting process.

Scent is the blend of several essential oils like lavender, jasmines, lemon, Citronella and others. This is mixed when the wax mixture is beginning to cool. Two high temperatures will cause the essential oils to evaporate.

The melted wax mixture is poured into prepared suitable moulds. These moulds can be recycled beer cans, yogurt box, empty milk carton or any used containers that are wax-lined.

Old fashion dipping process can be used also without the benefit of any mould. In this, a taut wick is repeatedly dipped into a bath of melted wax until the desired thickness is attained.

Another method of beginner’s candle making is by rolling sheets of wax into candle form. Wax sheets of different colors can be rolled to give the finished product a nice color combination. One advantage of this method is that it needs very little heating.

Another suitable beginner’s candle making method is by making a sand wax candle. Wax powders are mixed without melting it. The wax powder combination is placed in a suitable container .

Aside from these uses, candles are also commonly used as gifts to special occasions. These are some of the reasons why so many people become beginners in candle making. It is because there is some kind of pleasure in making your own candles.

Most often, we see candles being sold in various stores and shops. And, as you have observed, these candles are relatively expensive. Thus, many would want to try being a beginner in candle making. This fact encouraged those people to get hold of online starter kits in order to get started.

These are some tips that a beginner in candle making can consult:

1.You have to source out your materials; may it be online or through specialty shops. You can find all that you need in these craft stores. It can offer you all sorts of waxes and moulds along with the needed equipment such as thermometer, wooden spoon and double boiler.

2.If you have all the materials prepared already, you can get ready with the wax. You will need to break it down into little portions. Next up is to boil some water with the use of a double boiler. Afterwards, add the waxes. The mixture must reach at least 160 degrees. Utilizing a candle thermometer can ensure that you are getting the right temperature.

3.Beginners’ candle making includes various instructions when it comes to adding colors and scents. When the mixture is roughly done, you can now fit in your desired dye or scent. Perspective enters here. Remember to add a few drops of dye.

4.It is now time to get ready with the wick. Cut it into pieces in accordance to your preferred length. Continue with the dipping; after a couple of minutes, allow it to cool. Pursue the process until you get the right size of the candle.

5.After it has cooled down, you can already trim the wick; relax, anytime soon, everything will be made ready.

Colonial candle making is one common craft which produces pleasant results. In Colonial America, candle making was a necessity because there was no electricity to light up the homes of various families. And so, all women at that time needed to learn how to make candles in order to be the source of light of their families. They were definitely thankful that there was colonial candle making.

Colonial taper candles were the most popular candles during colonial times. Back then, in order to make candles, women made use of animal fat called tallows. Unlike candles today, the first candles during colonial times had an unpleasant smell and were not burning well.

Then, people from the elite class made their candles with the use of beeswax; this burned and smelled a lot better. But, at that time beeswax were not readily available at most places.

Soon after, a new discovery was held by the colonists. They have found out that bayberries could be a source of a pleasant fragrance upon adding it into the wax; in addition, these were much cleaner to burn. But bayberries also had a disadvantage; in order to make a candle, a huge number of bayberries were needed. Women took a lot of time and effort to make and finish these types of candles. Until this present time, bayberry wax is still available in most candle shops and stores.

Another chapter in colonial candle making arose in 1700s; whale oil was discovered to be a good ingredient in making candles. Spermaceti was the wax produced from whale oil. This wax burned longer and became the primary source of light of colonists during summer.

Upon knowing the origins of colonial candle making, you may want to try this type of candle making. It is relatively simple and easy. You just need a bayberry wax and pour it into any other type of wax. You also have an option to choose your own bayberries. This is more possible for residents of North Coast regions and other parts of Canada. Once decided to have your own bayberries, you will need approximately six pounds of berries to make one pound of wax.

During the colonial times, the molds that were used were comprised of wooden boxes. Unlike today, people back then did not have complete access to various types of molds.

Furthermore, colonists made use of cotton strands to be able to make a wick; the maintenance for the produced wick was definitely high.

Listed below were the materials used to make Colonial Candles.

Wax (either bayberry or paraffin)
Tin coffee can that is deep and narrow
Taper wick, non-waxed
Metal washer
Metal hanger
Small clip

Here are the complete procedures in colonial candle making.

1.First up is to melt the wax in any deep and narrow tin can. This container must be clean and dry.

2.Back then, women would need to tie one taper wick into a washer.

3.Next up is to dip the wick into melted wax for few times. Make sure that it is already covered by the wax completely after this period.

4.Afterwards, place the tin can on a heat-resistant surface.

5.Start dipping your wick into the can. Repeat this until you have already gotten your desired shape.

6.Finally, allow the candle to cool completely.

Colonial candle making is one tedious process, and we can only realize how lucky we are today to have a much convenient way to make precious candles.
